Maha Shivaratri
Maha Shivratri (also known as Shivaratri) is one of our most important Hindu religious festivals of the year, dedicated to Shiva, one of the deities of the Hindu Trinity (Brahma – creator, Vishnu- maintainer, Shiva – destroyer).
Maha Shivratri means ‘Great Night of Shiva’ (Maha= great, ratri=night). Each new moon is dedicated to Shiva, but Maha Shivratri is especially important because it is the night when He danced the ‘Tandav’, his cosmic dance.
It also celebrates the wedding of Shiva and Sati, the mother divine. Tradition says that Shiva, like his symbol the new moon, appeared in order to save the world from darkness and ignorance.
On this day, devotees perform special Puja – chant prayers & mantras and observe fasting to seek divine blessings of Lord Shiva.
In temples, Shiva linga – the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva – is worshipped. Devotees bath the Shiva linga with milk, water and honey, and then anointed with sandalwood paste, and decorated with flowers and garlands.
